Just when I think I’ve seen it all, yesterday morning at 7am our house was surrounded in a mysterious-feeling shroud of fog. Everything was so  still and cool. I felt like I was sleep-walking when I stepped outside. I thought you’d like to see it too. Later in the morning, after the sun was heating up the place and no traces of fog were to be seen, I spotted this beautiful green, fat frog checking out the to-be-stacked wood. She might have moved out of the neighbour’s field which was mowed 2 days a

Creative inspiration. Where does it come from and where does it go to? Like all eternal questions the answers vary from person to person and the reasons are complex. There are several ‘givens’ for me. My feelings have to kick in. I have to feel an inkling of an inner joy or excitement about looking at the object that I want to paint. I like to be well-rested so that I can focus on the task at hand. I feel especially inspired by nature, by colour, by visual things around me. Sometimes I am amazed by the
The past 7 days have brought about some breakthroughs. Where, you ask? we (Larry) finished painting the downstairs it has rained twice, ending the almost-scary drought conditions the ticks seemed to have gone into deep hibernation (replaced by mosquitos) I sold another large painting at the Flight of Fancy we started working in the studio We also had some lovely visitors from Halifax. We’ve been busy and this makes it tough to keep on top of the blog postings as often as I would like to. I want to s

In a small town of 800 (I still really question that stat…it feels more like 400) any activities that people take part in have to be organized by some of them.  There are no external organizations or entertainment groups in the background! Back in the city, (BC) I’d pick up a free copy of NOW magazine every Thursday and spend my subway ride home looking over the 100’s of possible events that would be taking place the following week. It really is/was mind boggling and I do wish that a few of those

This afternoon my friends, the Canadian Geese, dropped by to check out one of my vegetable gardens. Cute, cute, cute. Does anyone know what they eat? (flea beetles, not cabbage leaves hopefully?)

The other day we went for a walk with Pat and Peter and their enthusiastic doggie, Reggie. Like so many others here, they have worked out lots of different walks in and around Bear River and they are happy to share their discoveries and insights with us. As a city girl, I didn’t learn to really think outside the box in terms of exploring the natural environment. For one thing, most of the real estate in a city is private and the existing parks are fairly tame and well marked with well travelled paths. B
Yesterday we stepped away from our current obsessive-compulsive-behaviour that is otherwise known as gardening and kitchen painting and we went swimming! We’ve asked lots of people around her where they go swimming and we’ve had answers like “Oh, at Fred’s Hole (unmarked), down the Parker Road (unmarked). Or, at Big Lake (unmarked), which is legally named something else that the locals stubbornly refuse to call it. But more on that later. The directions were all rather vague. It’s been hot and dr
We woke up to rain on Saturday, which was a relief for the garden. We were saved from an afternoon of painting the kitchen because we remembered that today was the GRAND OPENING of the Bare Canvas Gallery and Studio in Bear River and so we dressed in our favorite Frenchy’s finds and drove the 4k to the event. While we were there, I talked to another recent-arrival and she commented about what a magical place Bear River is. She was trying to put her finger on exactly what it is that is the ’secret ingre
Larry continued the painting and finished the living room today. Here are the wonderful results! We both worked on the kitchen, and when that’s done, we can head to the Studio and start creating. (After making curtains there.) As I write, Larry is finishing up priming the walls. Fluffy has been rather agitated about all the action. She must wonder whether this is a prelude to moving or something! The US news website “Democracy Now” that I mention in the video is actually at http://www.democracynow.o
Linda Mae’s garden buddha. People in Nova Scotia are pretty laid back and I think this is even more true in Bear River. So our landlady Linda Mae only slightly surprised us when she said: “While you are housesitting this year, paint the inside of my house whatever color you want that will make you feel comfortable living here.” And then to top it off she said: “Plant whatever you want in the garden that will make you feel happy to live here for the next year. You say you want to dig a big piece o
